What in the world is metaphysics?
Have you ever found yourself asking that question? You might notice that these words “metaphysics” or “metaphysical” seem to be found in Journey’s name, courses and throughout the Center. But what is it?
Looking up the definitions in the Funk and Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of the English Language, Comprehensive International Edition; published 1978 we find the following definition:
Metaphysics – n. 1 The systematic study or science of the first principles of being and of knowledge; the doctrine of the essential nature and fundamental relations of all that is real. 2 Speculative philosophy in the wide sense. 3 The principles of philosophy as applied to the methodology of any particular science. 4 Mental science in general; psychology. 5 In popular use, abstruse and bewildering discussion.
Metaphysical – adj. 1 Of or pertaining to metaphysics. 2 Treating of or versed in metaphysics. 3 Beyond or above the physical or experiential; pertaining to or being of the essential nature of reality; transcendental. 4 Dealing with abstractions; apart from, or opposed to, the practical. 5 Designating certain poets of the 17th century, notably Cowley and Donne, whose verses were characterized by complex, intellectualized imagery: term originating with Dr. Samuel Johnson.
What a mouthful! And what does this mean? Metaphysics deals with our true and essential nature. It is above or beyond what we know in the physical. It is the universal laws and truths, and the pursuit of the understanding of these. It is learning to know your true Self and learning to live in this awareness, as your true Self in your daily physical lives. I invite you to come to the Center and begin your quest and journey in living as your authentic self.
